Information About Domestic Violence

  • Abuse is a pattern of behavior
  • Abuse always escalates
  • Abusers always blame someone else, it is NEVER their fault
  • If they abused someone before, they will abuse you
  • Abusers can be enormously charming and loving
  • Abusers control time with friends and family
  • Verbal/emotional abuse is abuse
  • Abusers often control the finances

  • Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Adoption Certificates, social security cards, passports, etc.
  • Any spare cash around the house, if there is a place where it is readily available, if you have the time store cash away over time
  • Toiletries and a change of clothes, don’t forget shoes
  • Medications for the victim and children
  • Favorite teddy bear or toy for each child for comfort/security
  • School books
  • Computers: computer where financial files are stored (if unable to take the computer, try and take the hard drive out), take abusers computer if portable or grab the hard drive (these are very useful in building a case for abuse and they are owned by you)
  • Bank and financial records, if sent to the house, to show account numbers
  • Financial files regarding the mortgage, cars or land you own or are paying on
  • One nice outfit -- for court, work, etc

Information about Child Abuse

  • Child molesters look "normal"
  • Child molesters are friendly, charming, and manipulative
  • Beware of people who are interested in children but don't have any themselves
  • Beware of people who are over interested in spending time with your children
  • Beware of people who do not spend time with people their own age
  • Know the background of adults who spend time with your kids
  • Beware of caretakers who take a particular interest (positive or negative) in a single child
  • Adults should always be chaperoned on trips with children
  • Photography is often a hobby of a molester
  • Child molesters sometimes target single mothers to "help" with children

  • Change of common behaviors for your child
  • Unusual sexual knowledge
  • Sexualized play with themselves and friends
  • detachment from friends or isolation
  • Bed Wetting
